What brought you to a career in technology at the United Nations?

My journey into a technology career at the United Nations began when I chose IT (Information Technology) as my major during my college diploma studies. Following my graduation, I joined the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), where I actively pursued numerous training opportunities in the field of IT and obtained relevant certificates. These experiences have played a pivotal role in shaping my expertise and instilling a deep appreciation for technology.

The diverse training within KDF has not only equipped me with technical skills but has also cultivated a mindset that embraces technology as a positive force for change. The collective experiences gained have set me on a trajectory of continuous learning and adaptation, reinforcing my commitment to leveraging technology for impactful contributions within the United Nations.

What has been your favorite technology project or initiative at the United Nations and why? What was your contribution?

My most favored IT project at the United Nations (MONUSCO FHQ) has been my involvement in the Event Booking Management System (EBMS). Through this project, I honed my skills in utilizing Cisco MX 700/800 for teleconferencing meetings. Additionally, my technical contributions extended to the seamless organization of Video Teleconferencing (VTC) meetings, where I employed the Vissonic system and integrated Internet Protocols (IP) microphones for optimal audio quality.

My specialization in this project includes the meticulous organization and management of in-person, online/virtual and hybrid meetings. This experience has not only strengthened my technical proficiency but has also allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the facilitation of diverse and effective communication methods within the United Nations framework.

What advice would you give women interested in pursuing a field in technology?

Avoid saying you are incapable; instead, acknowledge that women can excel in any task just as well as men, if not better.
