What brought you to a career in technology at the United Nations?

I came into the UN as a NCE (YPP) P2 Public Information Officer, with a strong background in technology and adoption of new tools. I was drawn to UN reform and the efforts to ensure that the Organization remains fit for purpose, through the adoption of appropriate modern technology and better management practices. I spent many years working on the deployment of Umoja and other ERP solutions, as well as numerous reform-related projects, gaining an in depth knowledge of technology and how it can help us operate more efficiently to carry out our mandates. The area of Business Intelligence and Analytics led me to focus on the importance of data, reporting and analytics in all areas of the UN. I am very honored to serve as the Lead of the new Data and Analytics Training Team as of February 2023 (DATT/CDOTS/DOS).

What has been your favorite IT project at the United Nations and what was your technical contribution?

While the Umoja project and various ERP solutions were my bread and butter for many years, I enjoyed the rapid and sudden deployment of Office 365 and SharePoint as central enterprise solutions for the UN, which required a quick, agile adoption approach. As the Project Management Officer for Umoja at that time, I enjoyed working closely with Gaya and team in OICT to pilot and test the various tools made available - practically overnight - and finding the best ways to migrate many separate legacy platforms, content and processes to Office 365, Teams and SharePoint. I have continued to enjoy learning the many new tools now widely available to us, such as the vast suite of Power Platform apps, Dataverse, Dynamics365, etc. and the continuous improvements and upgrades of Microsoft 365 apps and integrations.

What advice would you give women interested in pursuing a field in technology?

Don't let other techies intimidate or silence you! Women are proving to be key players in the STEM and tech fields. Keep learning and evolving, it's important to keep up with the new technologies as things are changing on a daily basis these days. It's an exciting and invigorating time to be involved with technology!
