Daniela Jiménez Lara
Data Scientist
United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime

What brought you to a career in technology at the United Nations?

Coming from a social science background I decided to shift my focus to data science. I realized the amazing opportunities that data analysis and technology could bring to policy making and to solving problems from the social sphere. The United Nations had an interesting project regarding criminal justice with data at its centre, so I was more than thrilled to participate.

What has been your favorite IT project at the United Nations and what was your technical contribution?

Automating randomized sampling and automating the creation of crime reports. I have also enjoyed creating Power BI dashboards to present data analysis.

What advice would you give women interested in pursuing a field in technology?

Be confident in your skills and never be afraid to try. Sometimes it can be daunting to immerse oneself in a male-dominated field, but now more women are entering this field willing to support each other.
