What brought you to a career in technology at the United Nations?

My career in the United Nations is primarily in human resources and administration. However, technology such as data analytics, SharePoint, and reporting tools in and outside the Umoja interface have become an integral part of our functions. I am particularly inspired by the opportunity to work on projects and contribute my skills and expertise to meaningful projects that have a positive impact on organizational-led innovations which is not limited to data analysis for more informed decision-making, enhancing communication and collaboration tools for global teams, or developing innovative solutions for humanitarian efforts.

What has been your favorite technology project or initiative at the United Nations and why? What was your contribution?

I am currently working on one of my favorite IT projects at the United Nations which is our initiative to improve data analytics and reporting for our HR department. My primary technical contribution was the development of a comprehensive HR dashboard using Umoja Self-Service Analytics. This involved gathering and integrating HR data from various sources, designing the user interface, and implementing data visualization tools. The dashboard not only provided real-time insights into HR metrics but also streamlined decision-making processes within the department. I thoroughly enjoyed working on this satisfying project that allowed me to leverage my technical skills to enhance our HR functions.

What advice would you give women interested in pursuing a field in technology?

Women interested in pursuing a career in technology should believe in their abilities, continuously develop their skills, seek mentorship and support, network actively, and be adaptable to changes. They should also advocate for themselves, embrace challenges, maintain work-life balance, and contribute to diversity and inclusion in the field. Overcoming stereotypes and biases is important, and mentoring others is a valuable way to help shape a more inclusive organization. Diversity in technology is essential for innovation and progress, and women have a crucial role to play in this evolving field.
