What brought you to a career in technology at the United Nations?

At a tender age, I was fascinated by the power of technology to transform lives and communities. My journey in tech began with a simple curiosity about how things work and evolved into a passion for using technology to solve real-world problems. When I learned about the opportunity to work in technology at the United Nations, I was immediately drawn to it for several reasons. Firstly, the global impact of the UN's work profoundly resonates with me. The idea of using my skills in technology to contribute to peacekeeping efforts, advance humanitarian causes, and support sustainable development worldwide is incredibly motivating. Technology can be a powerful tool in addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our times, and the UN is at the forefront of this endeavour. Secondly, the diversity and inclusivity at the UN are unparalleled. The prospect of working alongside professionals from a myriad of cultural backgrounds is exciting and a tremendous opportunity for personal and professional growth. It allows for a rich exchange of ideas and perspectives, essential for innovative technological problem-solving. Additionally, my professional background in developing tech solutions for social good and my academic focus on international relations have provided me with a unique perspective on how technology can be leveraged for global impact. Iﾒve always believed that technology should be accessible and beneficial to all, regardless of their geographic or socio-economic status, aligning perfectly with the UNﾒs mission. Lastly, the dynamic and challenging environment at the UN is precisely the setting in which I thrive. The constant evolution of global issues requires a commitment to continuous learning and adaptation, qualities I have cultivated throughout my career in technology. What has been your favorite technology project or initiative at the United Nations and why? What was your contribution?

One of my most memorable and favourite IT projects at the United Nations was migrating our systems from Windows 10 to Windows 11. This project stood out to me not only because of its scale and impact but also due to the technical challenges and learning opportunities it presented. My role in this project was multifaceted and critical to its success. It required a detailed analysis of our existing hardware and software to ensure they could support Windows 11. My team and I conducted extensive testing to identify potential compatibility issues, which was crucial in minimizing disruptions during the transition. Another significant part of my contribution was developing and implementing a comprehensive training program for our staff and recognizing the adjustments and new features in Windows 11, which involved creating user-friendly guides to address various queries and concerns. One of the challenges we faced was ensuring data security and compliance during the migration. I worked closely with our cybersecurity team to reinforce our security protocols and ensure that all data migrations were done in compliance with the UN's stringent data protection standards. Finally, my role involved post-deployment support and troubleshooting. I was part of the team providing ongoing support, addressing technical issues after the migration and ensuring the systems ran smoothly. Overall, this project was a significant technical undertaking and an opportunity to enhance operational efficiency and embrace newer technologies at the United Nations. The project demanded meticulous planning, collaboration, and technical expertise, and I am proud to contribute to its success.

What advice would you give women interested in pursuing a field in technology?

As someone who has navigated the field of technology, I would like to offer a few pieces of advice to women considering a career in this exciting and dynamic field: 1. Believe in Your Abilities: First and foremost, have confidence in your skills and knowledge. The tech industry can be challenging, but it's important to remember that you have earned your place through hard work and talent. Donﾒt let imposter syndrome hold you back. 2. Never Stop Learning: Technology is a constantly evolving field. Embrace the journey of lifelong learning. Whether through formal education, online courses, or self-study, continually updating your skills is crucial. This not only keeps you relevant but also opens up new opportunities. 3. Find or Become a Mentor: Seek mentorship from those who have walked the path before you. Mentors can provide invaluable guidance, support, and encouragement. As you progress in your career, consider mentoring other women entering the field. We grow by lifting others. 4. Build Your Network: Networking is vital in the tech industry. Attend industry conferences, join tech groups or online communities, and donﾒt hesitate to contact others in your field. These connections can lead to job opportunities, collaborations, or valuable advice. 5. Speak Up and Advocate for Yourself: Make your achievements known and advocate for your ideas. It's essential to be visible and vocal about your contributions. Donﾒt shy away from taking credit for your work, and ensure your efforts are recognized. 6. Challenge Stereotypes: The tech field is still battling gender stereotypes. Be a part of the change by challenging these stereotypes when you encounter them. Your presence and success in the field already make a powerful statement. 7. Work-Life Balance: Finding a balance that works for you between your professional and personal life is essential. This balance is crucial for long-term success and well-being. Please don't feel pressured to fit into a mould of what tech professionals should look like or how they should work. 8. Be Resilient: You might face setbacks or failures, but they are part of the learning process. Resilience is key. Each challenge is an opportunity to grow and improve. 9. Follow Your Passion: Find and pursue what excites you in technology. Your passion will be your most excellent motivator and guide.
