What brought you to a career in technology at the United Nations?

I came to the UN from the Egyptian government, where I led the country's national AI strategy and worked closely with different UN organizations to implement it. I became a believer in the multilateral process and the impact the UN can have on the world, and the impact technology can have on the UN. I also felt that my previous experience in the private sector (over 15 years in 5 countries) would come in handy in forming essential partnerships to help address humanity's biggest challenges and realize the SDGs.

What has been your favorite technology project or initiative at the United Nations and why? What was your contribution?

I only started last month, so haven't contributed much yet, but before I came to the UN, but before that I was part of an expert group which drafted the first version of the AI Ethics recommendation developed by UNESCO. I then participated in the whole process including intergovernmental negotiations, regional consultations, leading up to the adoption in late 2021. I felt that I contributed both technical expertise and the perspective of developing countries which I feel very strongly should not be left behind when we regulate and adopt emerging technologies such as AI.

What advice would you give women interested in pursuing a field in technology?

Don't rely on others to teach you. Read a lot, search for resources, and most importantly, experiment with a lot of projects. Learning by doing is the best way to excel in technology. When you interview for a position, adopt the mindset that you are highly qualified for the role an can ace it. This will come across in your attitude and body language and you will make a much better impression.
