The United Nations Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) has launched the Digital Accessibility Awareness Campaign, a system-wide initiative, to strengthen digital accessibility across the Organization.
The campaign, themed “Digital for All: UNited for an Accessible Future”, aims to empower UN personnel with the knowledge, tools and practical guidance needed to make accessibility an integral part of everyday digital work.
Digital accessibility is essential to ensuring equal participation in a connected world. Today, one in six people—about 1.3 billion individuals globally—live with some form of disability, representing 16 percent of the world’s population. Many others encounter temporary or situational barriers when interacting with digital technologies.
Through this campaign, OICT is promoting awareness of accessibility features available in Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams and SharePoint. These tools, such as alt text, real-time captions, accessible templates and the Accessibility Checker, enable personnel to create and share content that is usable by everyone.
The campaign encourages all personnel to become Digital Accessibility Champions by applying accessible practices in their daily work.
By fostering awareness and action, the United Nations continues advancing its commitment to building an accessible digital environment for all.
