Why did you decide on a career at the UN?

As a landscape engineer with a Ph.D. in Geography, Environment, and Land Use Planning, my education aligns closely with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 14 (Life Below Water), and 15 (Life on Land). GIS is a transformative tool for analyzing and visualizing complex spatial data, and I am passionate about using it to advance sustainable urban planning, protect ecosystems, and promote biodiversity.

What has been your favorite technology project or initiative at the United Nations and why? What was your contribution?

One of my favorite technology projects at the United Nations has been creating a collection of StoryMaps on the Shorelines of the Arab world. This project highlights the vast and diverse ecological, economic, and social importance of the Arab shorelines. The interactive nature of StoryMaps makes it easy for users to explore and visualize complex data on ecosystems, demographics, and economic activities. This enhances decision-making by providing clear, accessible insights that can guide policies on sustainable development, resource management, and conservation.

What advice would you give women interested in pursuing a field in technology?

I’d suggest focusing on gaining hands-on experience through projects or internships. Technology is ever evolving, so stay adaptable and prioritize practical skills over perfection. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and challenge traditional norms. There’s room for diverse perspectives, and tech needs women who bring fresh ideas and innovative solutions to the table.
