Why did you decide on a career at the UN?

My journey to the UN was unplanned and began when I moved to Bangkok. After completing a degree in computer science, I started my career as a web developer at a small company in Chennai, in the southern part of India, focusing on HR and data management systems. Joining the Inspira team at the UN enabled me to build on this experience and apply technology to deliver innovative solutions that advance the Organization’s mission.

What has been your favorite technology project or initiative at the United Nations and why? What was your contribution?

The UN Careers Portal is the project closest to my heart, as it serves as the primary point of access for job seekers aspiring to work at the UN. As part of the Inspira team, I helped redevelop the site and migrate it to a new technology stack. Another key initiative has been OneHR, which consolidates HR data from across the Organization into a unified system. My efforts have focused on enhancing the user experience by ensuring information is accessible, intuitive, and reliable. Additionally, I have participated in projects leveraging AI and automation to optimize HR processes. These initiatives not only improve operational efficiency for users but also provide a dynamic and continually enriching professional environment.

What advice would you give women interested in pursuing a field in technology?

Be confident and speak up. In my previous role, I was often the only woman on the team, and there were times I was expected to work during holidays. It took courage to set boundaries, but doing so earned respect and helped establish a healthier work-life balance. Many women also carry additional responsibilities at home, which can make pursuing a career in technology challenging. However, entering the field and committing to continuous learning is essential. Technology is constantly evolving, offering endless opportunities for growth and innovation. At Inspira, I receive full support in implementing ideas and introducing AI tools that simplify complex processes. Women bring unique perspectives that make systems more user-friendly and equitable. The UN and the world need more voices like these in technology.
