Why did you decide on a career at the UN?
UN is a highly diverse organization that fosters an inclusive and supportive work environment. It offers numerous professional development opportunities and mentorship programmes, which can help advance my career and stay updated with the latest advancements in technology. The UN places a strong emphasis on gender equality and women’s empowerment, thus inspiring and motivating me to contribute to closing the gender gap in the tech industry. It provides a stimulating work environment where I can apply my IT skills to solve real-world problems.
What has been your favorite technology project or initiative at the United Nations and why? What was your contribution?
My favorite technology project at the UN(MONUSCO) has been my involvement in the Unite FRIM system, which uses MONUSCO's data infrastructure for intelligent infrastructure management. Unite FRIM is an Internet of Things platform that collects data from infrastructure equipment and physical devices with embedded sensors. The data is used to measure, monitor and report on the status, operation, location and environment parameters of the devices. At MONUSCO, it is used to monitor fuel levels, energy generated, and fuel flow, allowing staff to track the performance of individual generators and fuel tanks. It also helps in monitoring the wastewater treatment plant system.
I contributed to this project by working collaboratively with other IT professionals, engineers, and field personnel to address challenges and implement solutions for the overall effectiveness of the Unite FRIM system. I also contributed to the analysis of data collected by the Unite FRIM system by providing insights that can help improve environmental performance, resource management, and operational efficiency in peace operations.
What advice would you give women interested in pursuing a field in technology?
Don’t be afraid of challenges or setbacks. View them as opportunities to grow and learn. Persistence and resilience are crucial for success in the tech industry.
