Why did you decide on a career at the UN?

I joined the UN because I wanted my work to create real impact. Although I started as an IC supporting FSS, the UN environment quickly sparked a deep passion for technology and innovation. Seeing how digital solutions could improve field operations, strengthen peacebuilding, and make people’s lives easier motivated me to pursue formal IT studies and later a master’s in data Visualization & Big Data.

Across my 9 years at UNVMC, my interest in the technical side kept expanding. I was fortunate to have a supervisor who recognized my curiosity and encouraged me to explore network infrastructure, ICT operations, and a broader technology career path. His mentorship was instrumental in helping me discover where I could truly thrive.

Since then, I have supported systems such as FSS, eBilling, iNeed, and Umoja; contributed to budget, acquisitions, contract administration, and payments for FTS; supported the implementation of network infrastructure in the mission, led innovative IT projects as project manager; and now I play an active role in designing and delivering the mission’s first AI Project.

What has been your favourite technology project or initiative at the United Nations and why? What was your contribution?

My favourite initiative has been contributing to the mission’s first AI project, Vera AI, designed to enhance the verification process through intelligent automation and deliver actionable insights that empower peace experts. I co-designed the architecture, and we are now presenting the proposal to the AI Working Group.

Another meaningful project was implementing ICT and network infrastructure across multiple remote offices in Colombia. I worked closely with engineers and technicians to deploy equipment, address field challenges, and ensure secure, reliable connectivity essential to mission operations.

What advice would you give women interested in pursuing a field in technology?

Technology is not only for those who start in IT, it's for anyone with curiosity and determination. Don’t be afraid to begin, even if your background is different. Learn continuously, seek mentors, and trust your voice in technical spaces. Your perspective is valuable, and your skills can transform systems, teams, and communities. Start small, stay consistent and believe you belong.
