What brought you to a career in technology at the United Nations?

The first time I visited the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) HQ in Nairobi, I was a high school student participating in Model United Nations (MUN). I remember thinking to myself, "Wow, it would be cool to actually work here with people from all walks of life, all working towards a global cause." At the time, it seemed so far-fetched and unattainable. Upon hearing about the United Nations Volunteer opportunity, which offers a platform to work on critical international issues, engage with diverse cultures, and make a tangible impact on the world, I was incredibly drawn to it. The UN's mission to promote sustainable development, protect the environment, and uphold international law resonated deeply with me. Moreover, working in a multicultural environment and collaborating with experts from around the world has been a unique and enriching experience that I have always aspired to be a part of.

What has been your favorite technology project or initiative at the United Nations and why? What was your contribution?

My favorite technology project at the United Nations has been working on the Environmental Governance Sub-programme’s website. This initiative involved updating and maintaining content to ensure that it accurately reflected the latest developments in environmental governance. It was particularly rewarding because the website serves as a key platform for disseminating information and raising awareness about critical environmental issues.

My contribution involved collaborating with various UNEP offices to gather content, designing and updating web pages, and ensuring the user experience was intuitive and engaging. I used content management systems like WordPress and Drupal, along with graphic design tools like Canva and Adobe InDesign, to create visually appealing and informative content. This project allowed me to leverage my skills in digital communication and design while contributing to a broader global mission of promoting sustainable development and environmental protection.
