What brought you to a career in technology at the United Nations?

I joined the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime right after completing my PhD in law, which focused on the implementation of blockchain technology for the purpose of fighting VAT fraud. During my studies, I realized that technology is global from day one, but most regulations, policies, and practices remain local. Nevertheless, to advance the Sustainable Development Goals, adopting digital approaches is no longer optional, but essential.

What has been your favorite technology project or initiative at the United Nations and why? What was your contribution?

My most meaningful project and the one to which I actively contributed was the development of GlobE Network Digital Hub. The project delivers digital services to anti-corruption law enforcement agencies. The GlobE Digital Hub aims to facilitate and enhance communication and cooperation among GlobE Network members to bolster joint anti-corruption efforts of member practitioners as well as increase awareness about the Network activities among non-member authorities. It integrates expertise and resources, including digital tools and services, best practices, and success stories, highlighting the support of GlobE Network. At the GlobE Network secretariat, we are convinced that addressing and combating corruption requires a multifaceted approach, and technology and digital tools can play a crucial role in investigations, data analysis, evidence collection, and more.

What advice would you give women interested in pursuing a field in technology?

Technology may seem intimidating at first, but don’t let that discourage you. Even if it doesn’t feel like your path right away, keep going—you’re more than capable of understanding even the toughest concepts. It’s worth it, as technology shapes our lives, and understanding it empowers you to navigate and impact the world with confidence.
