CSW60 - Technology Empowering Women: Closing the Digital Gender Gap to Achieve Agenda 2030

Background

As part of the sixtieth session of the Commission on the Status of Women, the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) is co-hosting a panel discussion entitled "The Role of Technology in Empowering Women" with ITU and UN Women on Thursday, 24 March from 1:15-2 p.m. in the General Assembly Building, Ex-Press Bar. Costa Rica, Switzerland, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates are sponsoring the event. A UN pass is required to attend.

Ms. Atefeh Riazi, Assistant Secretary-General and Chief Information Technology Officer, will deliver the keynote address.

With a significant global gender gap in technology access, use and training, the panel will discuss potential solutions to narrowing the digital divide. Moderated by Mr. Gary Fowlie, Head, ITU Liaison Office to the United Nations, the panel consists of:

  • Ms. Lakshmi Puri, Deputy Executive Director, Intergovernmental Support and Strategic Partnerships Bureau Assistant Secretary-General of the UN;
  • HE Juan Carlos Mendoza García, Permanent Mission of Costa Rica to the United Nations; 
  • Mr. Jamal Al Musharakh, Deputy Permanent Representative, Permanent Mission of the United Arab Emirates to the UN; 
  • Ms. Dominica Lindsey, Senior of Research Strategy & Evaluation, GSMA Connected Women; and
  • Ms. Andrea Ball, Executive Director, American Mothers.
