Why did you decide on a career at the UN?
I am drawn to a career at the United Nations because of my personal experiences in Sudan, a country that has faced numerous crises. Witnessing the UN’s crucial role in providing support and stability during these times, particularly in advancing gender equality and humanitarian aid, inspired me to dedicate my career to helping those in need. My passion for technology, demonstrated through my BSc in Information Technology from Khartoum University, aligns with the UN’s commitment to using cutting-edge technology for humanitarian work. My experience as a Radio Operator with the World Food Programme reinforced this connection, showing me how technology can enhance relief efforts. Driven by a desire to have a broader impact, I seek international roles at the UN to further develop my skills and contribute to global peace and security. The UN embodies the convergence of my interests in technology and humanitarian work, and I am eager to continue growing within the organization and making a positive difference in the world.
What has been your favorite technology project or initiative at the United Nations and why? What was your contribution?
My favorite technology project at the United Nations was the MINUSCA Network Segmentation Initiative. This project significantly improved our network security and operational efficiency by dividing the network into segments to control traffic flow, reduce the attack surface, and enhance performance. I played a key role in all stages of the project, from planning and risk assessment to execution and communication with senior management. The initiative successfully isolated sensitive data, minimizing unauthorized access and security breaches, while also optimizing network performance with reduced latency. This project highlighted the importance of strong leadership, detailed planning, and effective communication, allowing me to leverage both my technical skills and project management abilities. It reinforced my belief in the collaborative approach and the impact of technology in driving organizational change.
What advice would you give women interested in pursuing a field in technology?
As women in a male-dominated field, it can be intimidating, but there are key strategies to thrive. Commit to Growth: Stay current with technology through continuous education and professional development. Lifelong learning is crucial in this rapidly evolving field. Advocate for Equality: Champion gender equality and inclusivity within the technology sector. Mentor others and support diversity to create a more equitable industry.
